This thoughtfully designed home preserves the character of its neighborhood while maximizing space for a growing family through careful attention to scale, rooflines, and material choices.
To complement the modest bungalow-style homes of this semi-historical neighborhood, this two-story house with a bonus third level was designed to blend in with the scale and character of its surroundings while incorporating a modern aesthetic that maximizes livable space for a family of five.
The design and permitting process revolved around preserving four large trees on the lot, three of which are protected. Nestled among these trees, the four-bedroom, three-bath house features varied rooflines and a mix of exterior materials, adding architectural interest.
The home’s double-shotgun layout organizes the public spaces—living room, kitchen, and screened porch—on the left side of the entryway, while the primary suite and other private areas occupy the right. A utility room connects these two wings. On the second floor, two bedrooms and a shared bath provide additional family space. The third level, designed as a game room, makes the most of available ceiling height.
A steeply pitched roof and central staircase create an open and functional space, with large transom-style windows in pop-up dormers on either side bringing in ample natural light. The property also includes a detached garage with an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) above, adding versatility and extra living space.
