Versatile Tool Vest

The Diamondback 701 Vest offers an alternative to traditional tool belts, with adjustable features and the ability to accommodate both clip-on and traditional tool pouches for different tasks.

By Justin Cline Issue 329 - Feb/Mar 2025

Traditional tool belts tend to strain my back muscles. In search of a better solution, I landed on the 701 Vest from Diamondback, the Alaskan manufacturer known for premium tool belts and accessories. The 701 Vest does a great job at spreading the combined weight of all my tools evenly across my shoulders and entire torso.

It is composed of durable and breathable mesh, and a heavy-duty elastic is located down the back to absorb shock for added comfort. My jobs include rough carpentry, finish work, and everything in between, and my daily tools and fasteners get swapped out regularly.

Better Than a Belt-And-Suspenders Approach: The Diamondback 701 Vest holds tools high up on the chest so they won’t swing back and forth, with loops for clip-on tools and even a cordless drill.

So in addition to comfort, I was drawn to the 701 because it has a built-in belt that can accommodate clip-on tool pouches and pouches designed for traditional tool belts. There are also loops on the chest that can accommodate clip-on tools like tape measures or even a cordless drill. I have a few accessories (also from Diamondback) that I clip on and off all the time.

Another thing I like about the vest is that the pouches and tools sit a bit higher and don’t swing back and forth as much as they do when hanging down below my hips. This is an advantage when I’m working in finished spaces where damaging surfaces is a concern.

Diamondback’s 701 Vest is available in three sizes and has adjustable features to further customize the fit. You can buy the 701 Vest for $168 or the 701 Hi Viz Vest—which comes in yellow or orange for high visibility—for $196 at toolbelts.com.
